This chapter shows how God already knows that the Isreal is going to forsake the covenant, worship other gods and rebel against the Lord. Knowing that this was after 40 years of special training with God throughout the desert, this represents that men are already utterly corrupt (verse 29) and we have NO HOPE in ourselves to become better or more righteous people on our own AT ALL.
29 For I know that after my death you are sure to become utterly corrupt and to turn from the way I have commanded you. In days to come, disaster will fall on you because you will do evil in the sight of the Lord and arouse his anger by what your hands have made.”
This is a GOOD NEWS because we don't have to try to be something big, respected or great. Rather, we should be humble, low and accept our weakness and those must drive us to Jesus! And, His work on the cross on our behalf and his immutable love! So, all we do is to cling to Jesus! Hold fast to Jesus!
What I've also learned from this chapter is that it might be a gracious thing that God doesn't answer our prayers of personal gains, which could also mean that it could be a grace that we are stuck at a problem because when we are stuck at a problem, at least we don't have to worry about being drifted apart from the Lord by our corrupted self. On verse 20, it says that when Isreal gets satisfied, they will turn to other gods and worship them.
20 When I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, the land I promised on oath to their ancestors, and when they eat their fill and thrive, they will turn to other gods and worship them, rejecting me and breaking my covenant.
In my case I've been asking God for me to get out of here because of surgery but it could be a gracious thing if God just lets me stay here because when i'm out, I won't probably be as desperate as I am now, and I might turn to other gods.
That does not mean we shouldn't rejoice and thank God for what he lets us gain of personal requests. We must rejoice and thank him for everything and try to focus on Him as much as we could.
